Landscaping in Knottingley
Good landscaping makes a garden easier to use and easier to look after. Affordable Gardens & Landscapes is a family run, fully insured business based in Knottingley, and we offer all aspects of landscaping across the town and Ferrybridge, for homes and commercial customers alike: patios in Indian stone, new paths, driveways in block paving or gravel, gravelled areas, fresh turf or artificial grass, and full garden makeovers. Every project starts with the same three questions. How do you want to use the garden, how much time do you want to spend looking after it, and what does the space itself allow, from the light and the levels to what lies beneath the soil?
Taking a cue from Knottingley stone
Knottingley has its own building stone. The rock here belongs to the Permian Brotherton Formation, a magnesian limestone, and near Gagge Bridge on the canal it shows as a honey-coloured dolomitic limestone. The town's oldest buildings are made from it. St Botolph's Church, rebuilt around 1755 with some Norman fabric surviving, and Pear Tree Cottage, a former manor house kitchen from the 17th century or earlier, are both magnesian limestone. If your home or garden walls have that warm, pale tone, a buff or honey-toned Indian stone patio, or a gravel in similar colours, will usually sit more comfortably beside them than stark grey. Newer brick homes leave more options open, and a cooler grey stone can look crisp against red brick.
Patios, paths and levels
A patio is only as good as what is underneath it. It needs a firm, compacted base, joints that are filled consistently and a slight slope that sheds water towards the lawn or a drain rather than the back door. In a garden with stony or rocky ground close to the surface, levelling for a patio can mean more digging than you might expect, while a garden on lower, wetter ground needs the drainage thought through first. Paths deserve the same care: a firm, level route from the back door to the shed, the washing line or the bins gets used every day, and a wobbly slab on it gets noticed every day too. We look at the levels, the access and where water goes before suggesting a layout. Indian stone can be laid in a pattern of mixed sizes or in simple uniform rows, depending on the look you want.
Lawns, turf and artificial grass
New turf is the quickest way to a usable lawn, whether you are replacing a worn one or creating a lawn where there was none. Good turf starts with good preparation: digging out rubble and weeds, raking the surface level and firming it so the new lawn knits in evenly. Artificial grass suits some gardens better than turf: a dark strip down the side of a house, a patch the dog has worn bare, or a small garden where owning a mower makes little sense. It never needs mowing, but it does need a well-compacted, well-drained base beneath it and an occasional brush to keep it looking its best. A mix often works well, with real lawn where the sun falls and gravel or artificial grass in the awkward corners.
New-build gardens and complete makeovers
Glassmaking shaped modern Knottingley. It grew after 1870, and in 1887 Bagley's Glassworks bought the rights to a bottle-making machine invented by a Ferrybridge postmaster. Today one of the town's new estates, Persimmon's development on Common Lane, is called Glassworks. Most new-build plots come with little more than a lawn and a boundary, so there is plenty of room to make them your own. A complete garden makeover can add a sitting area outside the kitchen, a path, gravelled or planted borders and a better lawn, all planned together so levels and edges line up. In an older garden the same planning can rescue a cracked patio, awkward steps or a lawn that never drains. A makeover can often be designed in one go and built in stages, so the work fits around you.
Driveways and getting a quote
Block paving and gravel are both good options for a driveway or a parking space at the front, and the same thinking about falls applies, so rain runs into a drain or a planted strip instead of across the pavement or towards the house. Planning a new fence alongside the work? Our fencing in Knottingley page covers that side, and regular garden maintenance in Knottingley keeps a finished garden in good order afterwards. Call 07347 572509, Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm, to ask for a quote. The main landscaping page has more on the service, and our Knottingley page shows everything we do in town.
