What a garden makeover can include
Landscaping is about turning a garden that does not work for you into one that does. Sometimes that means a single new feature, like a patio where the afternoon sun lands. Often it means starting again: clearing out what is there, sorting the levels and building a garden around how you actually want to use it.
A complete garden makeover from Affordable Gardens & Landscapes can bring together:
- a patio in Indian stone for seating and dining
- pathways and gravel areas to link the garden and cut down on mowing
- new turf or artificial grass for a lawn that looks good all year
- fencing to finish the boundaries
- block paving and driveways at the front of the house
- borders and beds shaped around the new layout
Doing it as one project means everything is planned to fit together: levels that drain properly, paths that go where people actually walk, and a lawn that is the right size to look after.
A few questions help shape any makeover. Who uses the garden, and when? Where does the sun fall in the morning and in the evening? Do you want somewhere to eat outside, somewhere for the children or the dog to run, or simply a garden that takes less looking after? How much time do you want to spend on upkeep each week? Thinking about these before the first visit makes it much easier to agree a layout that fits, and the answers often change where the patio goes or how big the lawn should be.
Signs it is time for a makeover rather than a tidy
- The garden is tidy but still does not suit how you live.
- The lawn is patchy, waterlogged or simply too much work, however often it is cut.
- An old patio is cracked, uneven or sits in shade most of the day.
- There is nowhere comfortable to sit, eat or let the children play.
- There are no proper paths, so everyone wears a muddy track across the grass.
- You have moved into a house with a garden that was never really planned.
How a garden makeover runs, step by step
- Ideas and a visit. Call 07347 572509 and we will come and look at the garden with you. Bring your ideas, photos you like and a list of what the garden needs to do.
- Planning the layout. We talk through where the patio, paths, lawn and boundaries could go, which materials suit the house and how the garden will be looked after.
- A quote. You get a quote for the agreed plan.
- Clearing the site. The old garden is cleared and the garden waste taken away.
- Groundwork and levels. Ground is dug out and levelled, with falls planned so rainwater runs away from the house.
- Hard landscaping first. Patios, paths, edging, paving and fencing go in before anything soft, so the work does not damage new grass.
- Soft landscaping. New turf or artificial grass is laid and beds are prepared.
- The final tidy. Everything is cleaned down and the garden is handed back to you, ready to use.
Planning a makeover around the seasons
Most people start thinking about their garden in spring. Planning in autumn and winter instead means design decisions are made calmly and the work can be booked for when the ground and the weather allow. Hard landscaping such as patios and paths can be built for much of the year, but mortar should not be laid in frost. New turf establishes best in the cooler, damper months of autumn and spring, while artificial grass can go down whenever the ground is workable and dry.
What affects the scope of a makeover
- the size of the garden and how much of it is changing
- the materials chosen, such as Indian stone, block paving or gravel
- levels and slopes, and how much ground needs digging out or building up
- drainage, especially on heavy clay soil that holds water
- access for materials and for taking waste away, particularly if everything comes through the house
- what is being kept, such as an existing fence, a mature shrub or a shed
- whether you want everything done at once or in stages
We talk all of this through openly when we visit, so the quote matches the garden you have in mind.
A family run, fully insured team from start to finish

We are fully insured and offer all aspects of garden maintenance, regular maintenance and landscaping, with one aim for every makeover: turning your outdoor space into something you can enjoy. Because the same family team clears the site, builds the hard landscaping and finishes the lawn and fencing, you deal with one set of people from the first visit to the final tidy, rather than juggling several trades.
