Garden clearance across Castleford
Castleford grew quickly. During the 19th century its population rose from about 1,000 to 14,000 as collieries opened around the town, and today it is the largest town in the Wakefield district after Wakefield itself, with around 45,000 residents. That growth left a wide mix of gardens behind: enclosed yards behind older houses, longer plots on the estates that followed, and new-build gardens on former industrial land. Any of them can get away from you after a busy year, a house move or a spell of poor health. Affordable Gardens & Landscapes is a family run, fully insured business based in nearby Knottingley, and we cover Castleford from Whitwood, Cutsyke and Glasshoughton across to Airedale, Ferry Fryston and Wheldale, cutting overgrown gardens back and taking all the waste away.
Walled yards on the older streets
Some of the town's early housing came with small, enclosed yards rather than gardens. The Grade II listed Whitwood Terrace on Whitwood Common Lane, designed by C. F. A. Voysey in 1904 for the colliery company Henry Briggs & Son, is a good example. Every house there has its own back yard enclosed by brick walls, with a back gate and an outbuilding that once served as the privy and coal shed. If your yard is a similar shape, clearing it is mostly about access. Everything we cut has to leave through one gate, or sometimes through the house, so it is bagged as we work and the route stays clear. Ivy, bramble and self-seeded shrubs rooted along the base of an old wall are best dealt with early, before they push into the brickwork. If your home is listed or in a protected area, mention it when you call so we take extra care around the walls.
Long gardens on the estates
Further from the centre, gardens tend to be longer. Ferry Fryston, for example, includes former local authority housing that was transferred to Wakefield District Housing in 2005. A long garden that has been left goes wild in stages: the lawn turns to tussocks, the borders fill with nettles and bindweed, and the far end disappears under bramble. We start nearest the house and work outwards, so the space by the back door is usable again first, and old paths and edging often reappear as the growth comes away. Front gardens matter too, because they are the part of the house everyone sees, so it can make sense to clear the front and back in the same visit. If you rent your home, check your tenancy agreement before a boundary hedge is cut back hard, as some landlords want to be asked first.
Gardens next to open land and the river
Castleford sits where the River Calder joins the River Aire, and the rivers and reclaimed pit land give the town plenty of open green space. Fryston Country Trails, around 65 hectares of meadow and woodland running along the Aire, was reclaimed from the former Fryston and Wheldale colliery sites. Gardens that border open ground like this can have bramble and scrub pushing in from the boundary every summer, and a fence line can vanish under it surprisingly fast. Clearing the boundary strip properly, not just the lawn, makes the garden far easier to keep on top of. If we find a fence that is past saving once the growth is cut away, you can talk to us about fencing in Castleford as a separate job.
When to book a clearance
Late winter and early spring are a good time for a big cut back. Growth is at its lowest, you can see the shape of the garden, and the work is finished before birds settle into hedges and thick shrubs to nest. Early autumn works well too, once the summer growth has peaked. A clearance in the middle of summer is still possible; we check dense cover for active nests before cutting and leave anything occupied until later. Whatever the season, a dry spell makes the job quicker and kinder to the lawn underneath.
What a visit involves and how to get a quote
Call 07347 572509, Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm, and tell us roughly how big the garden is, how long it has been left and how we get in, whether that is a back gate, a side passage or through the house. We arrange to see it and give you a quote before any work starts. On the day we cut back overgrown grass, hedges and shrubs, pull out brambles and weeds, and clear all of the garden waste away, so you are not left with a pile to deal with. As one customer put it, “They cut everything back and cleared all of the garden waste away.” Once the garden is back under control, regular garden maintenance in Castleford can keep it that way.
