Overgrown gardens across Ossett
Ossett grew fast in the late 1800s on the back of the shoddy and mungo trade, and a lot of its gardens still sit on plots laid out in that period. Wakefield Council's conservation area appraisal describes the roads running out from the town centre, such as Station Road and Wesley Street, as leafy Victorian streets with mature trees, hedges and generous gardens behind stone boundary walls. Nearer Bank Street and the Market Place the plots get tighter, and some homes have little more than a yard. Out in South Ossett, where much of the town's newer building has gone, gardens are younger, but they can still disappear under growth after a couple of missed summers.
Each of those asks for a different kind of clearance. A long Victorian plot left for a few years usually means shrubs and hedges that have doubled in size, bramble and bindweed creeping along the walls, and a lawn and borders that need finding again. A small terraced yard is more often ivy, self-seeded saplings in the corners and a layer of moss and rotting leaves on the flags. On a newer estate it tends to be long grass, weeds coming up through gravel and a fence line lost behind an untrimmed hedge.
What happens on a clearance visit
We walk round the garden with you first and agree what stays. That step matters in Ossett, where plenty of older gardens hide a decent hedge, a rose or a shrub worth saving under the overgrowth. After that the job is simple: cut back, dig out, rake through and tidy, then load up the garden waste so it leaves with us instead of filling your garden waste bin for weeks.
One customer described the result as "cleared our very overgrown gardens very happy with the service very hardworking polite team". That's what we aim for on every clearance, from a single back yard to a garden that hasn't been touched for years.
Stone walls and protected trees
If you live inside the Ossett Conservation Area, which takes in the historic core around Market Place and Bank Street plus the Victorian streets leading off it, two things are worth knowing before a big tidy-up. Stone boundary walls are one of the features the council's appraisal picks out as defining the area, so we cut ivy and roots away from them carefully rather than tearing at loose stone or coping. Trees are covered too: Wakefield Council says you need its consent before you fell or prune a tree in a conservation area. Tree work isn't something we offer, so where a tree is part of the problem we'll clear around it and leave the tree itself for a specialist once you have the council's agreement.
When to book a clearance in Ossett
Ossett is a fairly wet town. The Met Office averages quoted for it put rainfall at just over 1,000 mm a year, spread over roughly 154 rainy days, so lawns and beds can stay soft and muddy for long spells in winter. Autumn is often a good time for a big cut back, when most growth has slowed and you can see what you're dealing with. Late winter works well too, before birds start nesting in hedges and thick shrubs in spring. If you need a hedge cut hard during the nesting season, we'll look through it first. Summer clearances are fine, though there's more green waste and everything grows back quicker, so a summer clear is often best followed by a few regular visits.
Keeping it clear afterwards
Once bramble and bindweed have been cut down they tend to come back from the roots, so a cleared garden needs some follow-up. Moving on to regular garden maintenance in Ossett means the grass cutting, edging, weeding and hedge cutting carry on through the year, and the garden never gets back to where it started. If the clearance uncovers a rotten fence, a sunken path or a corner you'd like to do something better with, you can also talk to us about landscaping in Ossett, from new turf or gravel to a complete makeover.
