Keeping a Horbury garden on track
Gardens in Horbury come in every shape, and the right maintenance plan depends on which one you have. A regular visit covers grass cutting and edging, hedge and shrub trimming, weeding of beds, paths and gravel, and a general tidy before we leave. You decide how often we come, and the schedule can follow the seasons, with frequent visits while the grass is growing hard in late spring and summer and lighter visits in winter. Whatever the pattern, the point is that the garden never drifts far enough to need a big rescue job.
The first visit sets the standard for the rest. We'll walk the garden with you, agree which parts matter most to you, whether that's a neat front lawn facing the street or the beds at the back, and note anything to keep an eye on, such as a hedge that needs bringing down gradually or a corner that stays wet after rain. After that, each visit follows the same plan, so you always know what's being done and nothing gets missed.
Mature trees and big gardens on the edges of the old town
Wakefield Council's 2026 conservation area appraisal describes the outer parts of old Horbury as later 19th century homes in larger plots with mature trees and planting. Victorian houses at the west end of Tithe Barn Street have substantial front and rear gardens with established planting, and houses on New Road sit back from the street in substantial gardens. Trees around Lydgate Villas, along Westfield Road and in the Memorial Park, which opened in 1904 as Sparrow Park, give that side of the town a green, settled feel.
For gardens like these, autumn is the busy season. Leaves from big trees settle on lawns and paths, and if they're left they smother the grass and make paving slippery. Regular visits rake and clear them, give the lawn its last cuts of the year when the ground allows, and keep established hedges and shrubs in shape so they never need a drastic cut later. Where a tree itself needs work, that's a job for a tree specialist, and in the conservation area Wakefield Council's consent is required first.
Terraces, the old centre and smaller gardens
Closer to the church, the appraisal describes a dense medieval core with terraces built against the pavement and very little greenery. Late Victorian terraces spread out from there along New Street, Manor Road, once known as Swamp Road, and around Westfield. Terraced houses usually come with smaller gardens, and a short, regular visit keeps them right: the lawn cut and edged, weeds pulled from paving and gravel, the hedge kept off the footpath and the borders tidied. Small gardens show neglect quickly, so a little and often works far better than a big tidy twice a year.
Sloping lawns above the Calder
Horbury sits on a hilltop with land falling steeply south into the Calder Valley, and many gardens on that side of the town have a slope or a bank. Steeper areas are slower and harder to mow, and banks are easy to ignore until they're knee-high. Regular visits keep on top of both, with the mower on the lawn and a strimmer on the banks and edges, so the view south towards open countryside isn't hidden behind long grass and you're not left wrestling a mower up a slope at the weekend.
Homes, rentals and commercial grounds
We look after gardens for homeowners, landlords and commercial customers. That might be a rented terrace that needs to look tidy between tenants, a block of flats with shared lawns, or the planting outside a shop or office near High Street and Queen Street, where the appraisal notes most of the town's shops and services are found. The work is the same in each case: grass, hedges, weeding and a tidy, on a schedule that suits the site.
One customer wrote: "Absolutely brilliant job of my garden", adding that they "will definitely have them back if I need some more work doing!" Being asked back is what regular maintenance is built on, so we aim to do the job properly every visit.
